Headache During Pregnancy

It is very common during pregnancy for women to experience headaches. Causes of headaches include an increase in hormones in the body, an increase in blood volume, and/or preeclampsia (high blood pressure) can also cause headaches. A migraine headache during pregnancy can mean any number of things. Your body is going through some major changes and hormones are flooding your body at unpredictable times and causing all sorts of physiological changes. That being said, a migraine headache can result from this but you might also get a migraine from external factors.

If you are looking to ease those aches that you are having in your head, then there are a number of different things you can do. Are you experiencing levels of stress? If so, then you should try to reduce it. If you have not been getting an adequate amount of sleep, then you need to try your bet to sleep. If you feel tired during the day time, then feel free to take you a little nap.

The best way to prevent and cure this condition is using natural remedies like:

Rest in a dark room and take some deep breaths Have a warm shower or soak for a few minutes in a warm bath Ask your partner or friend to massage both your neck and shoulders to reduce your headache Try applying around the nose and eyes a warm compress which will greatly reduce sinus headaches

A great way to reduce your chance of experiencing them is by having good posture, particularly in the last trimester. Also make sure you have plenty of rest and enjoy some form of mild exercise, even walking, and a nutritional diet.

They may also be triggered by alcohol, cheese, preserved meats and chocolate. You can minimize the chance of them occurring if you lesson your intake of these products.

Avoid fatigue - Pregnant women can become fatigued more easily than women who aren't pregnant, therefore it is important to avoid situations that can cause added stress and fatigue. That way, you are almost guaranteed to be free of migraines during the term of your pregnancy.

Drinking water throughout the day is essential in the reducing the chance of developing headaches. As pressure builds on the bladder from the increased size of the uterus it is easy to start to drink less, it is important that you do not fall into this situation. It is best to constantly sip water all day. An early sign of dehydration is dry lips; if you are continually reaching for the lip balm you should be increasing your water intake.

The best course of action is to be very diligent when it comes to trigger avoidance, as this is your best chance at avoiding a migraine. This means you will want to be extra strict about managing stress, eating regular healthy meals (without triggers,) and keeping a regular sleep schedule. Go ahead and use herbal tea such as ginger for your nausea but make sure you absolutely avoid feverfew as it is not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
